Hotels In Anchorage: Anchorage Museum reaching for the top
Date: From 06 April 2012 To 21 October 2012
Address: Anchorage Museum, Anchorage, Alaska

Many intrepid explorers have travelled to Alaska to try and scale its highest peak.

Mount McKinley is in fact the highest mountain in North America, standing at a jaw-dropping 20,320ft. Known locally as 'The High One', it looks imposingly over Denali National Park and Reserve.

This year, people staying in hotels in Anchorage will be able to visit a special exhibition at the city's museum. The High One: Reaching for the Top is set to take a look at early attempts to climb the continent's tallest peak.

From the history of the equipment used - both historical and the latest technology - to the routes traced, visitors will be given the chance to find their own way through artefacts, photographs and films. There will also be a number of hands on activities on offer.

Named by the Koyukon Athabaskan people who inhabit the mountain's surrounding areas, Denali literally translates as 'the great one". It was later named Mt. McKinley in support of then-president William McKinley, but it retains its dialect name locally.

The Millennium Alaskan Hotel Anchorage will no doubt play host to tourists wanting to see this exciting exhibition, which runs in conjunction with a project called Ascent, 20,320, which features photographs of Alaska mountaineering from the National Park Service.
